Episode 2: Griff Goes On A Date (1 of 7)
STC: Humble Beginnings pt. 1
Space Time Condominium debuted in the summer of 1994—a midseason replacement on CHCH TV11, and was with met less than stellar ratings and even worse reviews. While many view this as the first of many trials for the show that Canada Today dubbed, “Culturally devoid, schlock TV,” Space-Time Condominium’s journey towards television obscurity began years earlier.
In the summer of 1991, Canadian beet farmer Patrick MacBlain, awoke one blisteringly hot night muttering three words: Space. Time. Condominium. MacBlain knew he had struck gold, but being a simple man he had not the tools to mine it.
Patrick MacBlain, from a 1994 Calgary Sun interview:
“Hell, I hadn’t never even been to the city much less seen a condominium, but I knew that there was something to it, you know? I didn’t have a thing, but I had a great name to a thing– like coming up with the word ‘God’ before they’d named the almighty creator. So I did the only sensible thing. Packed up and moved to the city, yes I did.”
So the beet farmer made his way to the bright lights of Toronto completely unaware of what he would help let loose upon the world.
