Episode 8: Griffin Kills the Party (3 of 7)

Sorry, no wiki this week– I’m on vacation!

Instead, over the next two weeks I’m going to go over my top ten favorite zombie flicks :

Dawn of the DeadDawn of the Dead (1978)- Man, this one has it all. The Mall. The tough as shit black dude. Tom Savini being Tom Savini. In my opinion it’s the most fun of the Romero trilogy (That’s right, Land and Diary of the Dead don’t count). While the Zack Snyder remake may have more balls out action, this one delves deeper into the emotional impact of solitude, consumerism in society and has a hare krishna zombie to boot!

Night of the Living DeadNight of the Living Dead (1968)- Definitely in the running for best zombie flick. Ever. It’s the OG, and has the most honest, heartfelt commentary of the genre. This movie lauched the zombie genre, folks, and it’s damn near perfect!

Return of the Living Dead 3Return of the Living Dead 3 (1993)- Yeah, this movie is pretty terrible, but I have a spot in my heart for this one. The previous Return of the Living Dead flicks are played for laughs, and while this one may be unintentionally funny, it really is an interesting twist on your standard love story. Plus, it’s got a young Melinda Clarke (from the OC) as a half naked piercing fetish zombie. Brian Yuzna’s best movie by far, though he did have his hands all over the Re-Animator series.

Night of the CometNight of the Comet (1984)- Valley Girls are the last people on Earth? Hell, yeah! I saw this one in the theater and (much like Near Dark) it’s stuck with me ever since. No, it’s not a great movie, but it is a whole lot of fun.

Joss Whedon cites this movie as an inspiration for Buffy the Vampire Slayer; track it down and see if you can make the connection.

Dead AliveDead Alive (1992)- Peter Jackson before he was “Peter Jackson” doing what he did best. Dead Alive is a tongue in cheek gorefest with the best line in any movie: “I kick ass for The Lord!” You know this one’s near and dear to Peter Jackson’s heart– look for a Dead Alive Easter Egg in his King Kong remake.

This has been a lot of fun! I hope you enjoyed my list, and be sure to come back next week for five more zombie classics!
