I don’t mean to be sappy, but it’s 4AM and I’m feeling thankful. Tonight was one of the best nights of my life, and I can’t let it go without putting to print what made tonight special. Tonight was the four year anniversary of my podcast, The Geek Savants. It’s been a long and sometimes hard road, providing what we consider entertainment to a mostly faceless audience, and while I wasn’t keen on producing a “live show” (only live for those in attendance, this is still podcasting, after all) we pushed onward and, after months of planning (mostly by my co-host, Super Ugly) we did just that: recorded in front of a live studio audience.

I was a bit terrified, but the support shown tonight was overwhelming.

Tonight I’m thankful for the friends that came out to support us. The beautiful women that kept this from being a sausage fest. The fans and friends that traveled out of state to join us. The listeners who remained anonymous until tonight. The people that were almost arrested. The burlesque performers that raised everyone’s blood temperatures, and the artist and writers that rallied around us, in the collective pursuit of laughter.

Thank you. All of you.

For the most part, I live in a bubble, content to write, draw, and create for an unseen, unheard fanbase. The work that I put into the comicbooks and podcast are done blindly, and I’m always wondering who is actually reading, actually listening. Tonight your voices, your laughter were heard, and I couldn’t be happier. Thank you so much for supporting me, my work, and my podcast.

And I want to especially thank my co-hosts. Grant, Ron, Brian and John– we started this thing as an excuse to get together and, while I don’t think we actually need a reason, I’m glad to be able to spend my free time with you. I love you guys. Thanks for the four years. Here’s to many, many more.

–Dave

As Space-Time Condominium entered a legal battle with author David Gerrold, Milton Bradley’s infatuation with STC co-star Rebecca Beauvine became public knowledge. Milton had been stalking “His Becky” for months, and after a midnight altercation with Milt, Rebecca alerted producer Scott Coles of Milt’s romantic intentions. For the first time in STC history, Rebecca Beauvine speaks out on that tumultuous time in her life:

“I hate… I hate to admit this. At first I was flattered. Space-Time was my first real job, and Milt—Milton was a big deal. Having someone like that in your corner really builds you up, you know. It started out slowly; a subtle hand touch, hugs goodbye. I… I thought he was a good friend. We used to joke about how he saved my career. And the photos! Milt used to send me pictures of himself in costumes, with little notes like, “I’m your superhero! XOXO.” It was cute until he showed up drunk on my doorstep in a Superman costume. I had to draw the line”

During the most turbulent time in STC history, producer Scott Coles fired his head writer, Milton Bradley.

A photo Milton Bradley once gave to Rebecca in a misguided attempt to win her heart. He was obviously troubled.

Some of you probably know that I’ve been a co-host of the popculture podcast The Geek Savants for nearly three years. Last Sunday we released The Savanties, our annual awards show, showcasing the best in popculture in 2009. Before we started recording, my co-host held up a sheet of paper full of notes and quietly said “I have commercials.”

His four mock commercials drew from some of the funnier moments from the show, and one in particular involved two of my more unhealthy vices.

I thought it was hilarious and wanted to share it with you:

Dwonch the Raunch

If you thought that gag was funny, and haven’t given TGS a try, you really owe it to yourself to give us a listen. With almost 150 episodes in our archive and more laugh out loud moments on the way, now is the perfect time to jump on board!

After a string of critically acclaimed flicks including Shallow Grave (another one of my all time faves) and Trainspotting, Danny decided to up the ante and make a zombie movie… and a running zombie movie, to boot. Sure, ‘the running dead’ had been in films like Nightmare City (1980), but this one introduced the mainstream to a whole new threat level.

Dawn of the Dead (2004)- It may seem like a cheat throwing a remake on the list but what the hell, it’s one of my faves. Zack Snyder surprised the hell out of me by making this remake of the classic sequel. It’s got everything you’d hope for in a remake of the Romero classic: The mall, the memorable characters and strong visual style. What sets this one apart is the sea of running zombies. This one really took what Danny Boyle did with 28 Days Later and turned the volume up. Plus, you know, the zombie baby is pretty funny.

Evil Dead 2-Dead by Dawn (1987)- Sure, it’s more of a haunted house movie, but there are enough walking dead in this to consider it a zombie movie. Sam Raimi refined his directing chops with this sequel (or is this another remake?) of his 1981 cult classic movie. This one is played more for laughs, and Bruce Campbell embraces the role with a comic genius rarely seen on film. Raimi and Campbell have moved on to greener pastures, but Evil Dead 2 and its sequel Army of Darkness stand as high points in both of their careers.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)- Since we’re talking about the funny, no zombie movie has ever been funnier than Shaun of the Dead. I know that Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright carved out their careers on the BBC with Spaced, but this was the first time I had heard their names and it wasn’t but five minutes into this movie that I knew I’d be searching out their work for years to come. This movie is genius genius GENIUS!

Deadgirl (2008)- This is the nastiest movie I’ve seen in a while… and that’s a good thing. This coming of age story is about two teenage boys who find the body of a girl chained to a table in the basement of an abandoned insane asylum. It isn’t long before they discover that she isn’t quite dead, and decide to ‘keep’ her. If you think the premise is twisted then you haven’t heard anything yet. Go find this gem, just don’t expect to feel uplifted after watching it!

So that’s it for this week. Next week there is more zombie action as the clock ticks down to Halloween. If you know me, you know I’m a huge fan of this time of year, and I have something special planned at the end of October. And if you want more horror themed goodness, check out my podcast The Geek Savants every Sunday in October!
